Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has reclaimed 3,325 acres of government land valued at more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore in the two years since its formation, while intensifying efforts to restore lakes and strengthen the city’s flood management system.
Established by the Telangana government on July 19, 2024, HYDRAA was tasked with preventing encroachments on government land, protecting water bodies and addressing urban flooding across Hyderabad.
Lake restoration and flood mitigation gain momentum
HYDRAA has prioritised the restoration of Hyderabad’s historic network of interconnected lakes by removing encroachments from lakes, nalas, streams and adjoining government land while reviving the city’s natural drainage system.
According to the agency, six lakes have been fully rejuvenated, while restoration work is currently under way at 14 more lakes. HYDRAA is also developing four major lakes as Mini Tank Bunds, with plans to create landscaped parks, walking tracks, recreational facilities and other public amenities.
Flood mitigation has remained another key focus area. The agency has carried out desilting of lakes and nalas, restoration and widening of stormwater drains, and improvements to lake inlet and outlet systems to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater during the monsoon.
Officials said these interventions have helped reduce flooding in several vulnerable localities while improving groundwater recharge and enhancing the overall urban environment.
