Imran Khan Arrested: To Serve 3 Years In Jail
Former Pakistan Prime Minister was arrested in Lahore on Saturday after a trial court sentenced him to three years in prison in Toshakhana case, news agency Reuters reported.
The sentence relates to a probe conducted by the election commission, which found the ex-premier guilty of illegally selling state gifts worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000) during his tenure from 2018 to 2022.
Khan however has pleaded not guilty.
In a statement, Khan’s political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said they had already moved the Pakistan’s Supreme Court over the district court case, reported Reuters.
According to legal experts, this conviction could end Khan’s chances of taking part in national elections that is scheduled to be held before early November, Reuters reported.
