IND vs AUS 3rd Test Day 1 Live Updates: Focus on Axar, Ashwin after IND loses seven wickets in the opening session

IND vs AUS 3rd Test Day 1 Live Updates: India strangles at 84-7 at the end of the first session with Axar Patel and R Ashwin at the crease. India won the toss and opted to bat. Mitchel Starc started the day with a fiery spell. The left-arm pacer got the better of Rohit twice in the first over of the Test itself, but to his disgrace, the umpire was against them. Moreover, the Aussies didn’t review as well.

Spinners were brought into the attack in the sixth over. Rohit Sharma was the first one to depart, trying to shimmy down and go big against Murphy. Carey helped the bowler with the stumping. Shubman Gill followed his opening partner in no time, after an enticing delivery caught him at the outside edge, following a good low catch from Steve Smith at first slip. The dismissal of Cheteshwar Pujara seemed unfair as the ball turned massively from the sixth stump line and crashed onto the middle stump.

Ravindra Jadeja, who was promoted up the order, and Shreyas Iyer were flummoxed to see India struggle at 45-5. A 25 runs partnership followed between Kohli and Bharat. Both batters looked solid with their technique and were negating the spin trio of Lyon, Kuhnemann, and Murphy watchfully. Kohli departed off Murphy and Bharat followed him after a few counter-attacking slog sweeps.

We’re back!

Welcome back! Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin stroll toward the center. The Aussies have scattered all around the park for their respective positions. Matt Kuhnemann to start the proceedings for Australia. (India is 84 for 7 after 26 overs)

11:40 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Lunch Break!

Australia’s session, without any doubt. They lost the toss, Rohit Sharma was out twice in the first over, but the Aussies didn’t take the review. Smith brings in Matt Kuhnemann in the sixth over and straightaway put India on the back foot. Kuhnemann gets the first wicket. Rohit was beaten by the turn from the straight and is out by a long margin.  Kuhnemann gets his second as Gill’s defense results in a thick outside edge that is taken low at slip by Smith. Next in, Pujara is bowled by one that rips in and keeps low, he’s caught on the backfoot but it shoots through. Jadeja, got a reprieve off the previous ball when an inside edge helped him overturn an LBW decision. But the next ball he ends up slapping it straight to short extra cover. Shreyas Iyers ends up chopping Kuhnemann onto the stumps. Kohli falls after a 52-ball 22. He had looked quite assured on a raging turner until then. But Murphy gets one turn in, keeps low from round the wicket and he’s hit on the front pad. The LBW decision is confirmed on review as well. KS Bharat, who too looked comfortable was the seventh wicket fall as Lyon gets his third wicket. (India is 84 for 7 at Lunch on Day 1)

11:24 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Lyon pins Bharat!

Nathan Lyon traps KS Bharat for 17. Bharat lunges forward and tries to defend. Slightly turns inwards to beat the inside edge of Bharat’s bat and he wears it on the pads. A huge appeal from the Aussies has been turned down by Nitin Menon. Smith reviews. and Lyon has his third wicket.

11:18 (IST)01 MAR 2023

SIX!

The intent from Bharat! Bharat sits down on one knee and smashes a slog sweep from the middle of the bat. High and handsome way over the deep mid-wicket fence for a cracking biggie. (India is 82 for 6 after 23.3 overs)

11:16 (IST)01 MAR 2023

FOUR!

Murphy gets the big fish!

Murphy removes Kohli. Fuller-length delivery pitching on the off and turning into the middle stump line. Virat strides forward and misses the across-the-line flick onto the pads. 11:08 (IST)01 MAR 2023

A calm 30 minutes in Indore

A nice 23-run stand between Virat Kohli and KS Bharat as the duo are looking to rebuild India’s innings.  (India are 66 for 5 after 19 overs)

10:53 (IST)01 MAR 2023

FOUR!

Intent from Bharat! Bharat lunges forward and goes for the big slog sweep this time. He has timed it off the nucleus off the bat and the ball swirls towards the deep mid-wicket region for a boundary.

10:53 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Good call by Nitin Menon!

It was missing leg stump and Australia lose a review.

10:51 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Stump checking!

KS Bharat plays and gets beaten on the outside edge. The keeper clipped the bails off quickly and therefore the onfield umpires desire to take the suggestion from the TV umpire, Richard Kettleborough. Flat line as the ball whistles past the outside edge. Even, the foot is planted inside the crease. (India are 62 for 5 after 16.2 overs)

10:45 (IST)01 MAR 2023

More from Haydos

“You are allowed to have a four-five days Test match. At this pace I feel sorry for the fans, I don’t think this Test will go for Day 4.”

10:40 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Kohli hits a boundary!

Nicely dealt by Virat Kohli. Length delivery keeps low at the fourth stump line. Bit of turn away and the batter goes back and whips it across the line. Bisects the square leg and mid-wicket. (India are 56 for 5 after 13.5 overs)

10:39 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Matthew Hayden has made a scathing attack on Indore Test!

“No way spinners should come to bowl in the sixth over. This is the reason I don’t like these kinds of surfaces. It shouldn’t be keeping this low and turning so much on Day 1. It doesn’t matter whether Australia wins this test or India. These kinds of surfaces are not good for Test cricket,” says Hayden.

10:29 (IST)01 MAR 2023

IND vs AUS: WICKET!

Chopped on! Iyer departs without scoring. He dragged on! Iyer thought the ball ricocheted off Carey’s pad. The umpires send it upstairs. Looks like it brushed off-stump before hitting Carey on the pad. Iyer is on his way. India in deep trouble as they have lost half of their side. (India are 46 for 5 after 11.2 overs)

10:24 (IST)01 MAR 2023

IND vs AUS: WICKET!

Lyon gets Jadeja. Length and just a bit of room outside the off stump. Jadeja weighs back and slaps with an angled blade towards the fielder at catching covers. Kuhnemann was positioned for the same reason and Lyon has successfully trapped the southpaw. After surviving an lbw in the previous ball, Jadeja has found himself trodding back to the pavilion. Lyon gets his second. A good catch from the spinner.

10:24 (IST)01 MAR 2023

IND vs AUS: Jadeja survives

Inside edge saved Ravindra Jadeja. It looked plumb in front but Jadeja has gone upstairs for the review as the original decision is out. Length delivery, goes with the arm after pitching around the off stump line. Jadeja looks to jam the bat down but is beaten on the inside edge to wear on the pad. Ah, the replays show that there is an inside edge on it. A faint edge and Jadeja has done a superb job. He survives.

10:12 (IST)01 MAR 2023

IND vs AUS: Lyon cleans up Pujara

Nathan Lyon cleans up Pujara. It’s the 12th time Lyon has got Pujara in Tests. The ball remained very low as Cheteshwar Pujara gets back to push the ball, reading the length but it turns in and goes very low to strike the stumps. (India are 36 for 3 in 8.3 overs)

10:02 (IST)01 MAR 2023

IND vs AUS: Overthrow

Risky single attempted as Shubman Gill nudges the ball to mid-on and sprints to the other end! It would have been close if the ball hit the stumps but it goes past the backup fielder to the boundary ropes despite a dive from the fielder. (India are 32/1 after 6.5 overs)

09:56 (IST)01 MAR 2023

IND vs AUS: WICKET!

Kuhnemann strikes. Rohit departs for 12. Rohit Sharma ran out of the luck and is back in the hut. This was not a sensible approach! Rohit dances down the track and misses a wild across the line hoick through to the keeper. Carey behind the stumps does the rest as Kuhnemann gets the big wicket. (India are 32/0 after 6 overs)

09:55 (IST)01 MAR 2023

09:40 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Rohit Sharma survived twice in the over

Not a good start for Nitin Menon at his home venue. First, he didn’t give the clear edge and then a couple of balls later, the lbd decision was also turned down. Both times Australia decided against reviewing it. (India are 10/0  after 2 overs)

Pitch Report (Murali Karthik and Matthew Hayden)

“Good morning ahead of India vs Australia third Test here in Indore. Historically, it is a very good wicket to bat on. Very small boundaries and lightning-fast out-field boosts this. We have had high-scoring games across formats here.

This wicket seems almost similar to the first two Tests. The five-meter zone around the good length mark, is more like a normal wicket. 40 odd wickets have been taken by India with 30 odds by spin. The 23 wickets we’ve managed against India, some 20 are against spin. The fact that we have a bit of grass, it looks like a similar wicket. Bat first if you win the toss.”

Starc and Green return for Australia

Steve Smith: “Yes the surface looks pretty dry. No surprises there with Rohit deciding to bat first. It (The break between the Tests) came at a good time for us. The break gave us a bit more rest and we are fresh now. We are obviously thinking of a few changes. We have made two changes. Obviously, Patty (Pat Cummins) had to fly back home to be with his mother. Our thoughts are with him. Cameron Green comes in for Davy (David Warner). Mitchell Starc comes in for Patty (Pat Cummins).”

09:06 (IST)01 MAR 2023

Shubman Gill replaces KL Rahul

Rohit Sharma (India Captain): “We are going to bat first. Yeah, it is a very good dressing room. The morale is high. We played a lot of cricket, but this one is different. It looks a little bit dry. Yeah, off course, we’re not yet there. We will come well and try to do well, consistently to get the desired result. It is important for us to stay focused and do well. We have made two changes. Gill has come in place of KL. Shami is rested and Umesh comes in for him.”
