United Nations/Hyderabad, Sept 27 (Maxim News): India and Canada are preparing to take their relationship “to a higher level”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said after a “productive discussion” with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
“Always a pleasure to meet FM @AnitaAnandMP of Canada #UNGA81. A productive discussion as we prepare to take the relationship to a higher level,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
The meeting comes as New Delhi and Ottawa work to deepen bilateral engagement after a period of strained relations. The two countries have also been advancing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Both governments have expressed an objective of concluding the talks by the end of 2026.
PM Modi Expected to Visit Canada in December
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier this week that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada around December. Carney also said trade negotiations with India were making “good progress” and indicated that the two sides were working towards concluding the agreement around the G20 summit period.
The G20 Summit is scheduled for December 14–15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort in Florida. The precise date of Modi’s expected Canada visit has not been finalized, according to Carney.
The India-Canada relationship has gained momentum through high-level engagements this year. In June, Modi and Carney welcomed progress in bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to a forward-looking strategic partnership. They also reviewed progress on economic cooperation and CEPA negotiations.
Jaishankar also held meetings with other foreign ministers on the sidelines of the UNGA.
He met Venezuelan Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia Gonzalez and said energy ties between India and Venezuela were gaining momentum. The two sides also discussed other areas of bilateral cooperation and current regional issues.
Jaishankar further met Belarus Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov and Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco Alvarez during his engagements in New York.
