India-Pakistan Asia Cup Match: Asaduddin Owaisi Criticises Modi Government

He argued that the match raised questions about national priorities and whether cricket should take precedence over the lives lost to terrorism.

Owaisi questioned, “Is the match between India and Pakistan more important than the lives of people?” He recalled Prime Minister Modi’s own words: “The Prime Minister himself had said that blood and water cannot flow together, talks and terrorism cannot go together. Then how is this cricket match being played?” By invoking the prime minister’s earlier statement, Owaisi sought to highlight what he called a contradiction in the government’s approach.

The AIMIM leader also made it clear that even if refusing to play led to sporting losses, it would still be justified. “If playing the match causes India to bear the loss of a series, let it be. But no series can be more important than the lives of people who were martyred in terrorist attacks,” he said.

Owaisi’s remarks tie into the larger debate on whether India and Pakistan should engage in cricketing ties given the strained relations between the two countries. His comments underline the sentiment that sporting events should not overshadow issues of national security or the sacrifices of victims of terror incidents.

While some may see the match as an opportunity for sporting diplomacy, Owaisi positioned it as a test of priorities, questioning whether symbolic victories on the field should come at the cost of moral consistency.
