Hyderabad: India Silence on Khamenei Death has triggered sharp political reactions after senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi criticised the Centre for not responding to the killing of Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. She accused the Union government of maintaining silence at a time when Iran officially announced his death.
US and Israel attack Iran; Khamenei killed
It is known that the US and Israel jointly attacked Iran on Saturday. Bomb attacks were carried out in 30 areas of Tehran targeting Iranian leaders. Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei lost his life in the bomb attack. His daughter, son-in-law and grandson were also killed. Meanwhile, Khamenei’s wife, who was seriously injured, breathed her last on Monday while undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Later, authorities appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as the interim Supreme Leader in Khamenei’s place. However, the Centre has not yet responded to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader. No official statement has been issued so far.
Sonia Gandhi questions Centre over silence
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and asked him to stop the war. He suggested that if there is anything, it should be resolved peacefully. Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi reacted strongly to India’s silence regarding Khamenei’s death. She criticised the Centre’s stand.
Speaking to the national media, Sonia Gandhi said, “Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in attacks by Israel and America.”
“Iran officially announced this on March 1. Killing the Supreme Leader at a time when talks between Iran and the US are underway is damaging international relations. The Indian Prime Minister is not paying attention to the genocide of the US and Israel. But he is condemning Iran’s attacks on the UAE. He is not talking about the events that led to these attacks. Not condemning the assassination of Khamenei is not a neutral stance. It is abdicating responsibilities. The Centre’s approach raises serious doubts about India’s credibility,” he said.
Therefore, the issue has sparked debate over India’s diplomatic position. While the Centre remains silent, opposition leaders continue to question the government’s response. The situation has added to political tension over foreign policy and India’s stand on the ongoing conflict.
