Indian Railways | New Delhi / Hyderabad, Sept. 18: Indian Railways has approved two projects worth a combined ₹990 crore to expand passenger and freight capacity in Maharashtra.
The projects include doubling the 10.86-km Chouk-Karjat section of Central Railway for ₹497 crore. Railways has also approved a 38.21-km new rail line between Mukutban in Yavatmal district and Gadchandur in Chandrapur district for ₹493 crore.
The Chouk-Karjat section forms part of the Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route. It is an important corridor for both passenger and freight movement. Once completed, the doubling project is expected to allow five additional passenger trains in each direction every day.
Indian Railways | Mukutban-Gadchandur Rail Line to Boost Freight Movement
The new Mukutban-Gadchandur line will strengthen connectivity to industrial and mining centres in the region. These include cement plants, Western Coalfields Ltd coal mines and nearby limestone mines.
The project is expected to support 6.08 million tonnes of freight traffic annually. It will also enable two MEMU trains in each direction every day after commissioning.
The new line will provide a shorter route and reduce travel distance, transportation time and costs. It will also offer an alternative route to decongest the existing Wardha-Manikgarh section.
The freight traffic is expected to include coal and coke, cement, sponge iron, metal scrap, iron and steel, fertilisers and foodgrains.
The line will also provide direct connectivity between the coal and cement cluster and the Majri-Nanded route. This will facilitate shorter freight routes towards Jalna, Parbhani, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and destinations in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Meanwhile, the Chouk-Karjat doubling project is expected to support an additional 18.35 million tonnes of freight traffic annually. It will also help reduce the detention of freight trains..
