Indira Gandhi’s Political and National Legacy
Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. She was the daughter of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Kamala Nehru.
She served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination on October 31, 1984.
During her tenure, India witnessed several major political, economic and strategic developments. Her leadership during the 1971 India-Pakistan war led to the creation of Bangladesh.
Her government also supported the expansion of high-yielding crop policies during the Green Revolution, contributing to India’s efforts to improve food production and achieve greater food security.
Other major developments during her tenure included India’s first nuclear test at Pokhran in 1974 and the nationalisation of 14 major commercial banks in 1969. She also played a prominent role in the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War.
National Integration Day is observed on November 19, coinciding with Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
