Justice Surya Kant | New Delhi, Nov. 24: New Chief Justice Justice Surya Kant was sworn in on November 24, 2025, at Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Droupadi Murmu in a ceremony unprecedented in India’s judicial history.

Chief Justices from seven countries including Brazil, Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka attended, marking the largest international judicial delegation at a CJI oath-taking event.

Justice Kant succeeds Justice BR Gavai and will serve nearly 14 months until February 9, 2027.​

Born February 10, 1962, in Petwar village near Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant’s journey reflects a dedicated rise from modest beginnings.

Justice Surya Kant father was a Sanskrit scholar and teacher; his mother a homemaker. Despite his father’s encouragement to pursue engineering,

Kant chose law, studied at Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and began practicing law in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1985.

His wife, Savita Kant, a retired college principal and English professor, and their two daughters attended the ceremony alongside his three brothers.

The family holds deep ties to Petwar village, where Justice Kant often visits and honors students.​

Justice Surya Kant’s judicial career is marked by significant rulings and reform-oriented judgments. He was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004, served as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018, and joined the Supreme Court in 2019.

At the apex court, he was part of key decisions including upholding the 2023 abrogation of Article 370, suspending the colonial-era sedition law, ordering sanitation of Dera Sacha Sauda after violence.

Promoting one-third reservation for women in bar associations, and investigating Pegasus spyware allegations.

He also emphasized voter transparency in the Bihar Special Intensive Revision case, directing public disclosure of voter list removals.​

Known for balancing constitutional precision with social justice concerns, Justice Surya Kant’s appointment as Chief Justice symbolizes judicial reform and inclusion.

His experience ranges over 1,000 Supreme Court judgments on constitutional, human rights, and administrative law.
