Karimnagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Post Triggers Political Tussle
Hyderabad, Feb. 14: Karimnagar Municipal Corporation politics has intensified as parties scramble to secure the Mayor post.
While the BJP hopes to hoist its flag under Union Minister Bandi Sanjay, the ruling Congress is crafting a counter strategy to block the move.
As political negotiations gather pace, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is expected to hold consultations with key ministers.
Consequently, suspense has grown over the final outcome in Karimnagar.
Karimnagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Race Heats Up
Congress is reportedly exploring support from BRS, AIMIM and Independents to stop the BJP.
According to political sources, senior Congress leaders have already held talks with BRS leaders.
Moreover, reports suggest that BRS has shown willingness to extend support under certain conditions.
If this understanding materialises, Congress could combine forces with BRS, AIMIM and select Independents.
In addition, efforts are underway to attract a few BJP corporators.
However, BRS is said to be seeking either the Mayor or Deputy Mayor post in return for support.
So far, the BJP has not secured a Mayor post anywhere in Telangana.
Therefore, the party views Karimnagar as a significant opportunity.
Bandi Sanjay has publicly expressed confidence about winning here and influencing future contests, including in Hyderabad.
Karimnagar Municipal Corporation has 66 divisions. The BJP won 30 seats, Congress secured 14, BRS 9, AIMIM 3, AIFB 2 and Independents 10.
The magic figure required to win the Mayor post is 33.
Recently, one Independent and one Forward Block corporator joined the BJP.
Subsequently, two more Independents extended support, taking the BJP’s strength to 38 with the ex officio vote of Bandi Sanjay.
However, MLC Malka Komuraiah may not be eligible to vote as he is not a local elector.
Despite the BJP’s apparent numerical edge, Congress believes shifting alliances could alter the outcome.
Meanwhile, political circles expect dramatic developments before the Mayor election.
Former minister and Karimnagar MLA Gangula Kamalakar stated that BRS would support Congress for the sake of city development.
He added that development, not financial considerations, guided the decision.
The Karimnagar Municipal Corporation Mayor election now stands at the centre of Telangana’s evolving political equation
