Delhi, May 27: The Congress high command has reportedly intensified preparations for a leadership change in Karnataka, with the new Chief Minister likely to take oath on May 30.
According to party sources, the new government is expected to include three Deputy Chief Ministers this time. Reports said one Deputy CM post may go to a Scheduled Caste leader, another to an OBC representative and one to a woman leader.
The development comes amid strong speculation over a leadership transition in the Congress ruled state.
Siddaramaiah likely to resign
Sources said the Congress leadership has reportedly asked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to step aside and take up a key organizational role at the national level.
Reports further indicated that Siddaramaiah may resign after receiving direct communication from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the proposed leadership change.
According to political sources, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is likely to succeed Siddaramaiah as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Siddaramaiah seeks Governor appointment
Sources close to the Karnataka Chief Minister said Siddaramaiah has sought an appointment with Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot on May 28.
Political circles believe he may submit his resignation during the meeting, formally paving the way for the transition of power.
A close aide of Siddaramaiah reportedly confirmed that the Chief Minister had requested time to meet the Governor on Thursday.
Crucial cabinet meeting likely
Amid the ongoing political developments, Siddaramaiah is expected to hold a key breakfast meeting with cabinet ministers on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, DK Shivakumar, who is currently in Delhi, is likely to return to Bengaluru on Wednesday before heading back to the national capital on Thursday.
Sources said Shivakumar may also attend the breakfast meeting scheduled at the Chief Minister’s official residence.
The Congress leadership is expected to make an official announcement on the Karnataka leadership change soon.
