Delhi/Hyderabad, Sept 9 (Maxim News): The central government has taken a key decision to further strengthen the railway infrastructure in the country. The Union Cabinet has approved the expansion of seven high-density corridors in the railways into four lines. To this end, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given the green signal to multi-tracking projects worth about Rs. 11 thousand crores. With the latest decision of the center, the existing railway network will be expanded to four lines on the Delhi-Howrah, Howrah-Mumbai, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Guwahati, Delhi-Chennai, Howrah-Chennai, Mumbai-Chennai routes.
The decision of the central government will benefit many major cities in the country. Especially 14 districts in five states will benefit. Rail connectivity and transport capacity will increase in about 4,790 villages. Also, about 56 lakh people will benefit directly and indirectly. Meanwhile, the Delhi-Howrah route has key areas like Kanpur, Prayagraj, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, Patna, Asansol. The Delhi-Mumbai route connects Mathura, Kota, Ratlam, Vadodara, Surat. The Delhi-Chennai route has cities like Agra, Gwalior, Jhansi, Bhopal, Nagpur, Vijayawada. Similarly, the Mumbai-Chennai route connects many important areas including Pune.
These highly congested routes will now reduce the difficulties faced by trains. If additional railway lines become available, there will be an opportunity to increase the number of trains on the existing routes. This will allow passenger trains as well as freight trains to run more efficiently. These routes are particularly crucial for the transport of key commodities such as coal, cement, iron, steel and others. Once the multitracking works are completed, the freight transport capacity will increase by an additional 27 million tonnes per year.
On this occasion, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav responded to the expansion of railway infrastructure. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, railway modernization and infrastructure development work has been going on for 12 years. He said that the focus is on expanding seven major railway corridors with high traffic into four lines and developing more routes with high traffic demand in the future.
The decision of the Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs will benefit the Telugu states. As part of the Howrah-Chennai corridor, four lines will be constructed via Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada. As part of the Mumbai-Chennai railway corridor, four lines will come via Guntakal and Renigunta. Also, the fourth line in the Ghatkesar-Kazipet range will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 2,418 crores for 110 km. On the other hand, the CCEA has approved the construction of 3 and 4 lines in the Arakkonam-Renigunta section in three years. (Maxim News)
