Kidnapping Of Indians | The kidnapping of five Indian workers in Mali has heightened security concerns in the West African nation already struggling with frequent militant attacks.
Officials confirmed on Friday that armed men kidnapped the workers on Thursday near Kobri, a region in western Mali affected by ongoing jihadist violence and instability.
Security sources told AFP that the five Indian nationals were employed by a company engaged in electrification projects in the country.
The company spokesperson confirmed that after the incident, remaining staff members were evacuated to the capital city of Bamako as a safety measure. However, officials said no armed group has yet claimed responsibility for the abduction.
Kidnapping Of Indians
The news of the kidnapping has sent shockwaves among the Indian community working across Africa, as incidents targeting foreign nationals have increased in recent months.
Mali has witnessed repeated clashes involving insurgent groups since 2012, creating dangerous conditions for foreign workers in its remote areas. The government has been attempting to stabilize affected regions, but militant groups continue to pose a serious threat.
In September, militants from the al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) kidnapped two Emirati nationals and an Iranian near Bamako.
They were reportedly released last week after a massive ransom payment of $50 million. The recurring pattern of kidnappings for ransom has raised alarm among international companies operating in Mali, many of which now face tough decisions about continuing their projects.
Meanwhile, diplomatic and company sources say that all efforts are being made to ensure the safe release of the Indian workers.
The Indian government has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, but it is expected to closely monitor developments in coordination with Malian authorities.
The event underscores the growing risks faced by foreign workers in Mali and highlights the urgent need for stronger international efforts to restore peace and order in the region.
