Srinagar, July 8: A self-styled Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, identified as Zakir Ahmad Ganie, was killed during an anti-terror operation in Shopian district, Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
Security forces launched a search in a dense orchard in Meemandar on July 3 after surveillance cameras spotted two suspects. A joint team of the Shopian SOG, 55 RR, 44 RR and CRPF maintained a cordon for five days. Intermittent firing occurred as forces tightened the perimeter.
Victor Force deployed extra personnel to seal escape routes and improve visibility. Police said Ganie, 26, of Motalhama in Kulgam, had been missing since September 27, 2023, and a missing report was filed on October 3. Officials said he later joined The Resistance Front, a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot, and faced a FIR at Kulgam police station under the UAPA.
Authorities identified the other trapped suspect as Latif, who reportedly joined the outfit last year. Dense summer foliage complicated surveillance and allowed militants to exploit blind spots, officials added.
