Local Body Election Notification Likely by Mid-August, Telangana Gears Up for Polls

The State Government has directed the SEC to finalize the poll schedule by the first week of August, with the first phase focusing on Gram Panchayat elections, followed by Mandal Parishad, Zilla Parishad, and Municipal body elections in subsequent phases.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed all concerned departments to complete formalities related to welfare schemes—especially the distribution of new ration cards—before the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect, which is expected soon after the poll schedule is officially announced, likely any time after August 10.

The delay in conducting these elections had previously drawn the attention of the Telangana High Court, which directed the state government to complete the local body polls by the end of September 2025.

Hurdle Over BC Quota Still Remains

A significant challenge remains in the implementation of 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming polls. The ordinance for BC quota is still awaiting approval from Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, with officials hopeful that a decision will be made by the first week of August to enable a smooth rollout of the election process.

Poll Preparations Already Underway

  • The SEC has finalized the revised electoral rolls.
  • The Panchayat Raj Department has announced the total number of MPTC and ZPTC constituencies.
  • The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department has completed the reorganization of municipal wards and merged villages with urban bodies where necessary.
