Why is Maha Shivratri Important at Kumbh Mela?

Maha Shivratri is a major Hindu festival that celebrates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In the context of Maha Kumbh, it holds special significance because Lord Shiva played a crucial role in the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), which led to the emergence of Amrit Kumbh (the pitcher of nectar)—the central theme of the Kumbh Mela.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13, had six major holy bath (snan) days, including three special Amrit Snans:

  • Paush Purnima – January 13
  • Makar Sankranti – January 14
  • Mauni Amavasya – January 29
  • Basant Panchami – February 3
  • Maghi Purnima – February 12
  • Maha Shivratri – February 26 (Final Snan)
