Mumbai/Hyderabad, Oct 24 (Maxim News): The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a 33-year-old man in Mumbai over suspected links with the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) organisation.
The accused, Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar, was arrested near Mahim Metro station by the ATS’s Kalachowki unit following a tip-off. Officials said the investigation focuses on his alleged online activities and connections with extremist networks.
According to investigators, Akhtar worked as a Rapido rider and perfume seller. The ATS alleges that he used social media platforms to circulate radical content and promote communal hatred.
Investigators reportedly recovered objectionable material from his mobile phone. The material allegedly included audio speeches by JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar concerning the Babri Masjid and other issues.
ATS Probes Alleged JeM Links and Online Activities
The ATS alleged that Akhtar operated a Telegram group where he uploaded inflammatory audio speeches on June 1. Investigators also identified him as an active member of a Telegram channel named ‘IBN-e-Qasim’.
The agency is examining his online communications and possible links with Pakistani intelligence operatives. Investigators are also checking whether other individuals were involved in the alleged activities.
The arrest comes amid investigations into suspected JeM-linked networks in Gujarat. In July, the Gujarat ATS detained five people during a separate investigation into an alleged terror module.
Those suspects came under scrutiny during an earlier probe involving eight alleged JeM operatives, according to reports. Investigators sought to establish their alleged connections, online activities and access to extremist literature.
The Maharashtra ATS is continuing its investigation into Akhtar’s alleged activities and contacts. The allegations against him have not been established in court.
