Delhi/Hyderabad, Oct 16 (Maxim News): A sharp exchange took place in the Supreme Court during a hearing involving Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, after Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked her lawyer, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, to exercise patience.
According to a report by Live Hindustan, the exchange followed a heated argument between Sankaranarayanan and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. Justice Bagchi told the advocate that he should not take control of proceedings himself while expecting the bench to maintain order.
The judge asked Sankaranarayanan to remain patient as the court continued hearing the matter. The exchange came on the same day that the advocate reportedly withdrew from seven cases linked to protests in Delhi, citing concerns about the bench’s ability to control proceedings.
Supreme Court Hears Mahua Moitra Case
The hearing concerned Moitra’s plea over an incident at a government circuit house in Krishnanagar, West Bengal. The TMC MP had alleged that district officials pressured her to vacate the premises during an overnight stay in August.

Moitra had claimed that a crowd gathered outside the circuit house and raised slogans after she refused to leave. She also approached Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla over the alleged incident.
However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta disputed the allegation that Moitra had been evicted. He told the court that repair work was underway at the circuit house and that officials had offered her alternative government accommodation.
The Supreme Court also discussed the need for a standard operating procedure for allotting government circuit houses and guest houses to MPs and other public officials. Chief Justice Surya Kant observed that such disputes should ideally be resolved without reaching the apex court.

The dispute remains centred on the competing accounts of Moitra and the government. The court’s observations during the hearing do not, by themselves, establish the truth of either side’s claims. (Maxim News)
