Hyderabad: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of attempting to replace the Indian Constitution with its party manifesto. She alleged that the ruling party at the Centre is misusing democratic institutions and constitutional posts to advance what she described as anti people ambitions.
Mamata Banerjee made the remarks in a social media post. The statement came a day after she, her party Trinamool Congress, and the West Bengal government faced strong criticism. The criticism related to President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled programme at an International Santal Conclave at Gossaipur in Darjeeling district. The President was expected to attend the event as the Chief Guest and key speaker.
According to the Chief Minister, recent developments show a serious threat to democratic institutions in the country. She said the situation reflects a systematic attempt by the BJP and the Union government to use institutions for political purposes.
“What we are witnessing today is unprecedented, deeply unfortunate, and a direct assault on the democratic foundations of this republic. In their “One Nation, One Leader, One Party” frenzy, BJP has systematically weaponised every democratic institution and every constitutional post to serve their own Jono-Birodhi ambitions,” Mamata Banerjee said in the social media post.
She further alleged that several institutions have already been used against West Bengal. According to her, the BJP and the Union government first deployed central investigating agencies, different national commissions, a “servile” media, and a section of the judiciary against the state.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee also accused the Centre of misusing the Election Commission of India. She referred to the poll body as the “Vanish Commission” and claimed that legitimate voters are being removed from the electoral rolls in West Bengal.
“This is what they want. They want to replace Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution with their party’s manifesto. I have not stood for this. I will not stand for this. Our dharna at Dharmatala is our answer to every Bangla-Birodhi agenda that seeks to humiliate, intimidate, and persecute the people of this state. BJP’s only priority is power. My priority is and has always been people. These Zamindars of Delhi will never succeed in their mission to subjugate this great land,” the Chief Minister added.
Later in the statement, Mamata Banerjee referred to the historical role of Bengal in resisting oppression. She said the state has always stood against attempts to undermine its people and democratic values.
“Bengal rose to break the shackles of colonial rule. Bengal will rise again to pave the way for BJP’s inevitable downfall,” the Chief Minister said in the concluding lines of her statement.
The remarks highlight growing political tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP. The latest statement also reflects the ongoing political debate over institutions, governance and democratic processes in the country.
