Hyderabad, August 29: Kanchanbagh Police arrested a man for allegedly cheating a city resident of Rs 95,000 through a fake social media profile.
The accused, Golu Bairwa alias Golu Berwa, is a resident of Sheopur district in Madhya Pradesh. Police traced him using financial, telecom and digital evidence.
Kanchanbagh Police Track Accused Across Two States
According to police, Bairwa created a fake Facebook account using the name and photograph of a prominent public figure. He later contacted the complainant through WhatsApp.
The accused allegedly introduced himself as “Sumit Kumar, CRPF Officer”. He claimed that furniture would be donated to poor people.
He allegedly used the story to convince the complainant to transfer Rs 95,000. Police later analysed technical evidence to track his movements across Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
A special team was formed under the supervision of senior police officers. The team coordinated with local police and conducted discreet enquiries to trace the accused.
Despite changing locations, Bairwa was continuously tracked through technical evidence. On August 25, police traced him to a Central Bank of India branch.
Police said he was attempting to withdraw around Rs 91,000 when the team apprehended him. Further investigation and legal action are underway.
Kanchanbagh Police urged citizens to remain alert against fake social media profiles and impersonation scams. They advised people to verify requests before transferring money.
Citizens should not share OTPs, PINs, passwords or banking details with unknown persons. Suspected cyber fraud can be reported through the 1930 Cyber Crime Helpline or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
