The tremors struck the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region shortly after midnight on Thursday. The epicenter was 10 km away. According to the US Geological Survey. Five more minor tremors followed within a short period of time.

The main reason why Russia is prone to earthquakes is because it is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is the most active seismic and volcanic region on Earth. The Kamchatka Peninsula is located between the Pacific Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Earthquakes occur when these plates collide with each other.
