France captain Kylian Mbappe etched his name deeper into FIFA World Cup history by becoming the youngest player to make 20 World Cup appearances and the fastest player to score 20 World Cup goals during France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
The 27-year-old reached both milestones at the Boston Stadium, recovering from an earlier penalty miss to score in the 60th minute before providing an assist for Ousmane Dembele to seal France’s place in the semi-finals.
Youngest to 20 World Cup Matches
With his 20th World Cup appearance, Mbappe became France’s joint most-capped player in FIFA World Cup history, equalling Hugo Lloris. He now stands ahead of French legends Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, and Raphael Varane.
Overall, only Lionel Messi, with 30 World Cup appearances, has played more matches in the tournament.
Fastest to 20 World Cup Goals
Mbappe’s goal against Morocco took his World Cup tally to 20 goals in just 20 matches, achieved across the 2018, 2022, and 2026 editions of the tournament.
He now trails Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup record of 21 goals by just one strike.
Knockout Stage Specialist
Mbappe also strengthened his reputation as one of the greatest knockout performers in World Cup history.
Before the 2026 tournament, he had already scored eight knockout-stage goals, equalling Brazilian greats Leonidas and Ronaldo Nazario. During the current tournament, he extended that record to 12 knockout goals, becoming the outright leader in World Cup history.
France’s Winning Machine
The victory over Morocco marked Mbappe’s 17th World Cup win, drawing level with German legend Miroslav Klose on the all-time list.
Only Lionel Messi, with 20 World Cup victories, has recorded more wins in the competition.
