Hyderabad: Argentina captain Lionel Messi will start on the bench in his team’s final FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J match against Jordan, head coach Lionel Scaloni confirmed on Friday.
Argentina have already secured the top spot in Group J after victories over Algeria and Austria. As a result, Scaloni said he plans to rotate the squad and give opportunities to other players in Saturday’s match at Dallas Stadium.
Messi to Start on Bench Against Jordan
“So Leo is going to start on the bench. I’m giving you a sincere answer,” Scaloni said. He added that Messi would feature later in the match but declined to reveal the full starting lineup.
Messi, who turned 39 on Wednesday, has scored all five of Argentina’s goals in the tournament so far. He has also fully recovered from the hamstring strain he suffered while playing for Inter Miami in May.
Scaloni said every player in the squad deserves an opportunity after their commitment in training.
“Those playing tomorrow deserve to play. They are part of the team and have worked hard throughout the tournament,” he said.
The Argentina coach added that his goal is to ensure the team performs consistently regardless of the players on the field.
“If you wear the Argentina jersey, every match matters. We will always play to win,” Scaloni said.
He also noted that Jordan usually plays with five defenders and said Argentina could adjust its tactics if required during the game.
Jordan have already been eliminated from the tournament after defeats to Austria and Algeria. Argentina, meanwhile, have qualified for the Round of 32 and will look to maintain their winning momentum before the knockout stage.
