Meta Cracks Down on Facebook Groups, Instagram Accounts Linked to BJP MLA Raja Singh
Hyderabad, Feb 20 (Maxim News): Meta has taken action against two Facebook groups and three Instagram accounts connected to Goshamahal BJP MLA T Raja Singh for spreading hate speech and violating platform rules. The groups had over one million members, while the Instagram accounts had over 155,000 followers.
This move comes after a report by India Hate Lab last week, which exposed how social media platforms continue to allow the spread of extremist content despite having policies against it.
T Raja Singh was permanently banned from Facebook and Instagram in 2020 under Meta’s policy on “dangerous individuals and organizations” due to repeated hate speech. However, he and his supporters found ways around the ban, creating new groups and pages in his name. These pages regularly shared provocative speeches and content that violated Meta’s rules.
Meta’s latest action shows the ongoing challenge of controlling harmful content in India, where political debates are highly active online. While removing these groups and accounts is a step forward, experts say that stricter enforcement is needed to stop banned individuals from returning under new identities.
This also raises bigger questions about whether social media regulations are strong enough to tackle online hate speech, especially in politically sensitive cases. As Meta faces growing pressure to improve its moderation, it remains to be seen how effectively it can prevent future violations. (Maxim News)
