New York: A 22 year old Indian postgraduate student who had gone missing in the United States has been found dead, the Indian Consulate in San Francisco confirmed on Saturday. The development comes less than a week after he was reported missing.
The student, Saketh Sreenivasaiah, was enrolled in the Master of Science programme at the University of California, Berkeley. He hailed from Karnataka and had been missing since Monday, February 9. However, authorities later recovered his body, according to an official statement.
Indian Consulate Confirms Student’s Death
In a post on X, the Consulate said, “The Consulate deeply regrets to inform that local police have confirmed the recovery of the body of the missing Indian student, Saketh Sreenivasaiah,” it said. The mission did not disclose further details about the circumstances.
Meanwhile, the Consulate extended condolences to the family. It said it “stands ready to provide all necessary assistance to the family, including coordination with local authorities and arrangements for the repatriation of mortal remains to India at the earliest.” It also added, “Our consular officers are in direct contact with the family and will support them with all required formalities and services.”
Student Enrolled at University of California, Berkeley
Sreenivasaiah was pursuing his Master of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Earlier, local police had sought public help in tracing him. They had urged anyone with information to notify law enforcement authorities.
According to The Berkeley Scanner news portal, his backpack was found on a doorstep in the Park Hills neighbourhood. The bag reportedly contained his passport and laptop. However, officials have not released further details about the case.
The incident has drawn attention to the safety of Indian students studying abroad. Meanwhile, the Indian mission has assured full support to the bereaved family as formalities continue
