Hyderabad: A landslide in Mumbai’s Kurla area killed five people on Wednesday, while four to five others are feared trapped under the debris.
The incident occurred around 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl in Ghatkopar’s Chirag Nagar, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade.
A portion of a hillside reportedly collapsed and sent debris onto two to three houses. Initial reports suggested that five to six people were trapped following the collapse.
Multiple agencies launched a rescue operation soon after the incident. Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are searching the debris for survivors.
Rescuers are also using specialised victim-detection cameras to identify signs of life beneath the rubble.
Two injured people were rescued and shifted to hospital. They were identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who sustained a back injury. Both were reported to be stable.
Mumbai Landslide Rescue Operation Underway
Officials said the exact number of people trapped under the debris was yet to be confirmed. However, four to five people were feared trapped as rescue teams continued their search.
The bodies of those who died were shifted to a hospital for further procedures. The Ghatkopar Police are expected to take necessary legal action and investigate the circumstances surrounding the landslide.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner for Eastern Suburbs Avinash Dhakne visited the affected area and assessed the situation.
Tawde also announced financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh for the families of those killed. The compensation will be distributed through the District Collector’s Office.
Rescue operations were continuing at the site, with authorities using specialised equipment to locate and safely recover anyone who may remain trapped.
