Municipal polls: Congress and BRS eye chairperson posts in united district

Municipal polls | Hyderabad, Jan. 24: Political activity has intensified in the united districts as Congress and BRS leaders focus on municipal chairperson posts ahead of the municipal elections.

In the 12 municipalities going to polls, both parties are preparing to field strong candidates and secure a majority of wards as per reservations.

With the municipal election schedule expected soon, leaders have begun reviewing ward wise reservations and internal strengths.

Since chairpersons are elected from among ward members based on reservation norms, parties are identifying influential local leaders and preparing them for the contest.

Parakala, Torrur and Wardhannapet municipalities have been reserved for general category this time. Congress leaders are showing strong interest in these chairperson posts.

Maripeda municipality has been reserved for general women, where leaders from both Congress and BRS are in the race.

Janagama and Bhupalpally municipalities are reserved for BC general, while Mulugu and Narsampet are reserved for BC women.

Competition for chairperson posts remains intense in these municipalities as well. In several areas, senior leaders are preparing their spouses to contest where women reservation applies.

Mahabubabad has been reserved for ST general and Kesamudram for ST women. Station Ghanpur and Dornakal are reserved for SC general.

These municipalities are also witnessing keen political competition.

Congress leaders are targeting at least 11 of the 12 municipal chairperson posts in the united district. The party has appointed two ministers as in charges to oversee the election strategy, candidate selection and coordination at the ward level.

Leaders are also reaching out to influential figures from other parties with assurances of tickets.

BRS leaders are working to retain their existing municipal presence, viewing strong performance as crucial ahead of the next Assembly elections.

Former ministers and ex MLAs are actively involved in planning to secure a majority of wards. Meanwhile, the BJP is preparing to contest all municipalities, while attempting to strengthen its base by inducting leaders from other parties.

With all major parties treating the municipal polls as a prestige battle, the contest in the united district is expected to be closely fought.
