Nagarjuna Sagar And Srisailam Project Is Near Dead Storage
Hyderabad, May 3 (Maxim News): Currently, only 15 TMC of water is available for consumption in the Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam projects combined. While the dead storage of Nagarjuna Sagar is 510 feet, the current water level is 514 feet. While a total of 138 TMC is stored in the project, only 4 feet above the dead storage can be used. Of that, only 7 TMC of water is available. While the dead storage of Srisailam is 834 feet, the water level of Srisailam has already reached 814 feet, there is a storage of 37 TMC of water.
However, while both the states are able to transfer wter from 800 feet in the project, the remaining water for use even at that level is only 8 TMC. While there is a total of 15 TMC of water available for use in both the projects together. Official sources say that only 12 TMC will be left after water transfer and evaporation losses. However, AP will now require 10 TMC and Telangana 16.2 TMC, a total of 26.2 TMC of water. This will result in a shortage of more than 14 TMC.

AP has once again planned to exploit water. The state, which has already exceeded its quota, is now trying to siphon off more water in the name of drinking water. A few days ago, AP inned the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to release another 10 TMC through the Nagarjunasagar right canal for drinking water, it has appealed to the board to allow water to be released through the right canal until the 31st of this month.
There are concerns that if the board gives in to AP’s request, we will definitely suffer serious losses. Officials say that if AP moves 10 TMC of water from Nagarjuna Sagar, we will have to lift the water by installing motors.
AP, on the other hand, says that there is an opportunity to lift the canal gates from the Nagarjuna Sagar project dead storage as well. They say that once the project reaches the dead storage, we will have to bear the additional burden of moving the motors there and their costs. (Maxim News)
