National Herald Case: MLC Sravan Dasoju Demands CM Revanth Reddy’s Resignation
Hyderabad, May 26, (Maxim News): BRS MLC Dr Sravan Dasoju has written an open letter to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, urging him to resign from office following his alleged involvement in a financial corruption case, as named in a charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald matter.
Dr Sravan alleged that Revanth Reddy, while serving as a public representative, solicited crores of rupees in donations to the Young India entity in exchange for political positions, in what he termed a politically motivated quid pro quo. The charges, he stated, fall directly under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and represent a violation not just of legal provisions but of constitutional morality.
Emphasising that the matter transcends personal allegations, Dr Sravan wrote, “Your continuation in office violates the very soul of public service and constitutional morality.” He underscored that Telangana’s Chief Minister holds a constitutional position and must be held to the highest standards of integrity. Citing Article 164 of the Constitution, he noted that a Chief Minister’s misconduct compromises the entire Cabinet through the principle of collective responsibility.
He referred to key Supreme Court judgments to support his demand, notably S.R. Bommai v. Union of India (1994), which held that those holding constitutional posts must act in accordance with constitutional morality, and State of NCT of Delhi v. Union of India (2018), which affirmed that the authority of public office comes with an inherent expectation of integrity and transparency.
Dr Sravan argued that in India’s Westminster-style parliamentary democracy, even the perception of corruption demands accountability, and that resignation in such cases is not punishment, but the minimum moral duty. He wrote, “When the Chief Minister is tainted, the government — i.e., the cabinet — is collectively stained. If the head falls morally, the body cannot remain upright.”
To strengthen his argument, Dr Sravan listed several notable instances of political resignations across parties and decades, illustrating a tradition of leaders stepping down upon serious allegations.
Across party lines and over the years, several prominent Indian political leaders have resigned from public office following allegations of corruption or impropriety, setting moral precedents. L.K. Advani resigned in 1996 after being named in the Jain Hawala diaries, despite not being charge-sheeted. Lalu Prasad Yadav stepped down as Bihar Chief Minister in 1997 after being charge-sheeted in the fodder scam. Congress leaders like Natwar Singh (Oil-for-Food scam), Shashi Tharoor (IPL controversy), Ashok Chavan (Adarsh scam), and Suresh Kalmadi (CWG scam) relinquished their posts under scrutiny. UPA allies A. Raja and Dayanidhi Maran resigned over the 2G and Aircel-Maxis scandals respectively. BJP leaders such as B.S. Yediyurappa (illegal mining), Ramesh Jarkiholi (sex-for-job video), and K.S. Eshwarappa (40% commission charge) also vacated office when implicated. Even Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal resigned in 2024 after being arrested and formally named in an ED charge sheet related to the liquor policy case. “These instances demonstrate that moral accountability has often prompted resignations, even before judicial outcomes, reinforcing the importance of public trust in constitutional roles,” he said.
Dr Sravan stressed that Revanth Reddy’s case is not an exception. “Your name appears not as a footnote but as an active participant in a quid pro quo financial corruption case,” he said, adding that continuing in office while being investigated would drag the dignity of the Chief Minister’s chair “into national disgrace.”
He appealed to the Governor of Telangana to intervene if necessary but urged the Chief Minister to take proactive moral responsibility. “Do not allow the sanctity of your office to become a shield against investigation,” he warned.
The letter ends with a passionate call: “Resign, Shri Revanth Reddy Garu… and allow justice to prevail without obstruction. Step down to restore public faith in governance and in democracy.” (Maxim News)
