Kabul, July 25: Nearly 100,000 Afghan refugees returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan and Iran over the past month, with the government reporting that 97,277 people crossed into the country through multiple border points.
Deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said 14,539 refugee families, comprising 97,277 individuals, returned through the Islam Qala crossing in Herat, Torkham in Nangarhar, Spin Boldak in Kandahar, Pul-e-Abresham in Nimroz, and Bahramcha in Helmand.
Fitrat said all returning families received immediate assistance, including food, drinking water, healthcare services, and free transportation to their destinations. He added that most of the returnees came from Pakistan.
According to Afghan officials, more than eight million Afghan refugees have returned to the country since the current administration assumed power in August 2021.
Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it has handed over family tents to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation as part of its ongoing humanitarian assistance.
The MEA said the tents will support the shelter and rehabilitation needs of Afghan returnees.
Afghanistan has witnessed a steady rise in refugee returns, particularly from Pakistan, following Islamabad’s intensified drive to repatriate undocumented migrants and refugees. The enforcement campaign began after the July 10 deadline for Afghans without valid visas expired.
According to media, officials at the Hamza Baba transit point in Landi Kotal reported that more than 10,000 Afghan refugees have been returning daily since Pakistan ordered Afghan nationals without legal status to leave the country.
