Indore, June 20: A 21 year old NEET aspirant died after falling from a multi storey building in Indore, just two days before the NEET UG 2026 re test, police said on Friday.
The student, identified as Avantika Maurya, was preparing for NEET for the past three years. Police said the incident took place on Thursday night and she died during treatment on Friday morning.
According to Bhanwarkuan police, Avantika lived in a rented house in the same building. Investigators said she went to the rooftop while speaking on her mobile phone around 11 pm and then fell from the building.
People nearby rushed her to a hospital after hearing the sound of the fall. However, doctors declared her dead on Friday morning.
NEET aspirant death under police investigation
Police said they have registered a case and are probing all possible angles, including suicide. Officers are examining her mobile phone and call records to determine who she was speaking to and whether any conversation may have contributed to her distress.
Avantika’s father, Dr Bansingh Maurya, said his daughter had been suffering from depression for nearly five months. He said she had become irritable and preferred to stay alone. He also said she had been under treatment and had been preparing for the NEET UG exam for the last three years.
Police said the family has not yet cited any specific reason for her distress. However, family members told investigators that she wanted to become a doctor and may have been stressed because she could not clear NEET in the past three attempts.
The incident has come amid the NEET UG controversy this year. The medical entrance exam held on May 3 was cancelled on May 12 after allegations of a question paper leak. The re examination is scheduled for June 21, while the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the leak allegations.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari expressed grief over the student’s death and linked it to the wider NEET paper leak controversy.
