Basant was born during the 2004 Tsunami at New Delhi’s National Zoological Park, which led to his name. In 2009, he was brought to Hyderabad as part of an animal exchange program, quickly becoming a star attraction with his graceful presence. Following his death, Nehru Zoological Park is now left with a single male giraffe named Sunny.

A post-mortem was conducted to determine the precise cause of death, with samples sent to the Veterinary Biological Research Institute (VBRI) for further analysis.
