Nepal Flash Floods | Nepal, August 27: Nepal flash floods have killed nearly 160 people and left more than 750 missing. The disaster struck central Nepal after a major surge from Tibet on Wednesday.
The flooding devastated towns and villages along affected river systems. It also washed away bridges and damaged several hydropower projects. Rescue teams continue searching for survivors.
Nepal Flash Floods Trigger Major Rescue Operation
The US Geological Survey later said a glacial collapse caused the disaster. It said debris from the collapse triggered the catastrophic downstream flow.
Earlier, officials had linked the flooding to seismic activity in Tibet. However, the USGS said the reported tremor resulted from the glacial collapse and debris flow. At least 133 Indian nationals remain among those reported missing. Many Indians were travelling through the region for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
Meanwhile, India is closely monitoring the situation. The Centre has also remained alert to possible effects along the India Nepal border, especially in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
Rescue agencies continue operations across affected areas. Authorities are also assessing damage to roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure.
The disaster has caused major disruption across the Himalayan region. Therefore, officials continue to focus on locating missing people and providing emergency assistance.
