Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli Resigns

Katmandu/internet/Hyderabad, Sept 9 (Maxim News) A key development has taken place in Nepali politics. PM KP Sharma Oli has resigned from his post amid widespread anti-government protests. A new prime minister is likely to be elected in the evening. KP Sharma Oli’s resignation statement said he was resigning at the behest of the army. Oli stepped down shortly after hundreds of protesters entered his office chanting anti-government slogans.

Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday in the face of massive anti-government protests rocking the country, officials said.

Nepal’s youth have taken to the streets to protest the government’s ban on 26 social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and WhatsApp. The protests turned violent, with protesters setting fire to ministers’ residences and government buildings. They also tried to storm the parliament building. At least 20 people were killed and over 300 injured in the incidents.

Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel has reportedly asked Prime Minister Oli to resign as the situation has escalated. The army has reportedly said that the only way to restore peace in the country is for the Prime Minister to resign. Oli resigned from his post on the army’s advice. He said in a statement that he resigned to find a solution to the political crisis.

Before Oli’s resignation, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Agriculture Minister Ram Nath Adhikari, and Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav also resigned from their posts. As the situation escalated, there were also reports that Prime Minister Oli was trying to flee the country to Dubai, and private airlines were ready to fly him to Dubai under the pretext of medical treatment (Maxim News)
