The government has decided not to link the ration card to Aarogyasri. The Cabinet also approved this decision in this context, how to identify the beneficiaries of the scheme? officials are working on it. They are thinking of applying the scheme to everyone irrespective of their ration card and financial status. Currently, On Aarogyasri the government spends Rs. 1,100 crores annually.
Officials estimate that if the scheme is applied to everyone, it will be an additional Rs. 400 crore. Only people belonging to poor families are availing Aarogyasri scheme. In this context, officials say that applying Aarogyasrito all will not cause much financial burden.
It has been decided in principle to add some more procedures in addition to the existing treatments under Aarogyasri. About 72 new procedures have been identified so far. At present there are 1,670 treatment procedures under Aarogyasri, there is a chance to meet about another hundred of these. Also, the government has focused on price revision of packages. Aarogyasri is still maintaining the same package prices as when it started. Earlier prices were increased by ten per cent only for some procedures. The network hospitals want to increase the package rates according to the increased prices.

As the previous government ignored the appeals of the hospital owners, Aarogyasri patients faced difficulties. As soon as the Congress government came, the Aarogyasri limit was increased from Rs. 5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh. But, as the prices of the packages have not been revised, the old fashioned situation continues. If the patient goes to the Aarogyasri hospital, the hospital owners insist that they will treat them only if they collect additional money. As a result, patients have to pay extra money from their pockets.
The Tamil Nadu government is implementing the Traumacare package to provide free treatrment to patients in emergency conditions such as accidents, strokes, suicides etc. in private hospitals. As part of this package, the government is bearing the charges of upto Rs. 1 lakh for a patient admitted in Traumacare. The main objective of this scheme is to save the patient’s life by providing treatment in the golden hour. Health officers say that there is a possibility of implementing a similar method in our state.
