Nine-Day Bathukamma Festival Begins
Hyderabad, Sept.28 (Maxim News): The annual nine-day “Bathukamma” floral festival today started across Telangana State and some parts of the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Engili pula Bathukamma — first day of the festival falls on Mahalaya Amavasya, also known as Pethara Amavasya in Telangana region. Food offering/Naivedyam made of Nuvvulu (Sesame seed) with biyyam pindi(rice flour) or nookalu (coarsely ground wet rice).
Bathukamma represents cultural spirits of Telangana. It is celebrated by the womenfolk heralding the beauty of nature in vibrant colors of multitudinous flowers.
Bathukamma is a flower stack arranged with different seasonal flowers in several concentric layers. On the occasion, women dress up in heir best and celebrate the festival for nine days till a day before Dasara festival. The womenfolk play around ‘Batukammas’ clapping hands singing in chorus every evening and immerse them in a pond. (Maxim News)
