“No State Has Done What Telangana Did Today”: Uttam Kumar Reddy on Historic Ration Card Drive
Hyderabad, July 14 (Maxim News): In a landmark move, the Telangana Congress government has distributed over 5.61 lakh new ration cards in a single phase, setting a national record for public welfare. Food & Civil Supplies Minister Capt. N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, speaking at a massive public meeting in Tungathurthi (Suryapet), hailed the rollout as a “revolution in public service delivery.”
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy formally launched the new ration cards during the event, marking the end of an 11-year wait for lakhs of eligible families across the state.
“No state, no country has done what Telangana did today,” said Minister Uttam, adding, “This is a new Telangana. If you’re eligible, you will get a ration card. No bribes, no brokers, no waiting lists. We’re restoring dignity and ending a decade of discrimination.”
Key Highlights:
- Over 5.61 lakh new ration cards issued in a single day – the first large-scale issuance in more than a decade.
- 95.56 lakh households now hold ration cards, covering over 3.09 crore beneficiaries.
- 80% of Telangana’s population now receives fine quality rice for free under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
- Telangana becomes the only state in India to distribute fine rice (6 kg per person) completely free of cost.
Minister Uttam emphasized that this was not just a political promise, but a moral commitment inspired by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s vision behind the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
“Sonia Gandhi gave India the legal right to food. The Congress government in Telangana has given it a soul by delivering it to every poor family,” he said.
He further criticized the previous BRS government, accusing it of denying ration card access and allowing the Civil Supplies Corporation to accumulate ₹59,000 crore in liabilities. Under Congress leadership, the department has been revived and transformed into the engine of India’s most ambitious welfare program.
The state is now spending ₹13,000 crore annually to procure and distribute fine rice. Additionally, farmers cultivating fine paddy are receiving a ₹500 per quintal bonus, helping the state achieve a record 281 lakh metric tonnes in grain production.
“This is not broken or leftover rice. It is fine rice—what every family deserves,” said Uttam, calling it a “world-class welfare model.”
He also touched upon efforts to revive the irrigation sector, complete pending projects, and secure Telangana’s rightful water share from Krishna and Godavari rivers. The government’s broader mission, he said, was to integrate agriculture, irrigation, and welfare for sustainable development.
