OGH Surgeons Perform Rare Liver Transplant On Patient With Marfans’ Syndrome

Hyderabad, April 17 (Maxim News): In a groundbreaking surgery, the surgeons at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) on Thursday reported a successful liver transplant surgery on a 37 year-old patient with Marfan’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder.

The liver transplant surgery could be considered as a medical milestone, as the patient was suffering from both Marfan’s Syndrome and Hepato Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a medical condition due to liver dysfunction and pulmonary vascular abnormalities.

Head of surgical gastroenterology, OGH, Dr. Ch.Madhusudhan, who led a team of caregivers from multiple medical departments for conducting the transplant surgery, said that this was the first time that such a surgery has been attempted.

The patient was diagnosed with genetic syndrome in early adulthood and had been under regular monitoring for cardiovascular complications. Despite being in medical management, he developed severe liver disease, ultimately progressing to very severe hepatopulmonary syndrome. The patient’s condition deteriorated to the point where he was experiencing severe hypoxemia and respiratory distress. significantly impacting daily activities and overall quality of life.

Liver transplant surgery was the only way out for the patient. A multidisciplinary team consisting of hepatologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, and transplant surgeons carefully evaluated the patient’s condition. After extensive deliberation and review of available medical literature, the team decided to proceed with liver transplantation as the best course of action to address the severe HPS. Preoperative assessments included detailed cardiovascular evaluations to ensure the patient’s readiness for the major surgical procedure.

“On the day of the surgery, the patient was meticulously prepared, and the liver transplantation was performed successfully.  The surgical team encountered challenges due to the patient’s underlying Marfan’s syndrome, including fragility of tissues and increased risk of cardiovascular complications.  However, the procedure was completed without significant complications, and the patient was transferred to the intensive care unit for postoperative care,” Dr, Madhusudhan said.  (Maxim News)
