Old City Bonalu Begins Amid Tight Security

Hyderabad, August 9: Bonalu celebrations began in Hyderabad’s Old City on Sunday, August 9, with large crowds gathering at major Mahankali temples.

The annual two day festival has brought a festive atmosphere to several historic areas. Police have also deployed extensive security arrangements across the Old City.

Major celebrations are taking place at the Sri Simhavahini Mahankali Temple at Lal Darwaza. Temples in Sultan Shahi, Hari Bowli and Uppuguda are also witnessing large gatherings.

Women devotees began arriving at the temples early in the morning. Long queues formed as women carried decorated earthen pots called bonams on their heads.

Ghatam procession to conclude celebrations Monday

Devotees traditionally offer cooked rice mixed with milk, jaggery and curd to Goddess Mahankali. They decorate the bonams with neem leaves and place a small lamp on top.

Meanwhile, police have made elaborate arrangements to manage the crowds. Security teams are monitoring the temple areas and procession routes.

The arrangements aim to ensure the smooth movement of devotees and prevent disruptions during the festival. Police are also overseeing traffic movement in crowded areas.

The two day celebrations will conclude on Monday, August 10. The traditional Ghatam processions will pass through historic parts of the Old City.

The procession will move through areas including Charminar and Shahalibanda. It will eventually reach the Nayapool immersion point near the Musi River.

Bonalu remains an important Telangana festival dedicated to Goddess Mahankali. The celebrations combine religious rituals with traditional processions and community participation.

Authorities have asked devotees to cooperate with security personnel during the festivities. The police will continue monitoring the Old City until the processions conclude.
