Hyderabad: Women accounted for 47.8% of the 19,41,444 electors deleted in Hyderabad during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, according to a preliminary analysis by the SABAR Institute.
The analysis covered official SIR data from 15 Assembly constituencies. It found that five constituencies in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency recorded the highest shares of women among deleted electors.
Bahadurpura, Chandrayangutta, Karwan, Yakutpura and Malakpet recorded higher female shares among deletions. Nampally, which falls under the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency, also showed a significant share.
In Bahadurpura, 62,885 women were among 1,21,350 deleted electors, accounting for 51.8%. Chandrayangutta recorded 76,099 women among 1,48,869 deletions, or 51.1%.
Karwan had 69,391 women among 1,41,766 deleted names, accounting for 48.9%. Yakutpura recorded 75,319 women among 1,54,982 deletions, or 48.6%. In Malakpet, 71,644 of 1,47,799 deleted electors were women, accounting for 48.5%.
Nampally recorded 65,212 women among 1,37,126 deleted electors, representing 47.6%.
Old City Constituencies Show High Shares of Muslim-Classified Deletions
The report also examined the composition of deleted names using a methodology based on names and surname tokens. It estimated that Muslim-classified electors accounted for 40.7% of all 19,41,444 deletions.
The highest shares were reported in Bahadurpura at 85.9%, Chandrayangutta at 72.4% and Charminar at 62.4%. The report clarified that these figures represent the share of Muslim-classified names among deletions, not a religion-wise deletion rate.
The five Old City constituencies with the highest female shares of deleted electors are represented by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Nampally is also represented by AIMIM but falls under the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency.
Across the 15 constituencies, Jubilee Hills recorded the highest number of deletions at 1,79,510. It was followed by Yakutpura with 1,54,982, Chandrayangutta with 1,48,869, Malakpet with 1,47,799, Karwan with 1,41,766 and Musheerabad with 1,40,070. Nampally recorded 1,37,126 deletions.
The report found that women’s share across the recorded deletion reasons was broadly similar to men’s. Women accounted for 50.2% of removals classified as “Untraceable/Absent” and 40.9% of those recorded under “Death”.
Among deleted women, 6.9% were recorded as deaths, compared with 9.1% among men. Permanent shifting accounted for 69.6% of deleted women and 69% of deleted men.
SABAR Institute lead researcher Sabir Ahamed said the scale of deletions was notable, particularly because some voters who had participated in recent elections were also removed from the rolls.
Researchers Ashin Chakraborty and Souptik Halder said the number of names deleted in Malakpet and Yakutpura was higher than the total votes polled in those constituencies.
The analysis also found differences in the reasons recorded for Muslim-classified and non-Muslim-classified deletions. About 19.8% of Muslim-classified deletions were marked “Untraceable/Absent”, compared with 16% among non-Muslims.
Similarly, 7.6% of Muslim-classified deletions were marked as enrolled elsewhere, compared with 3.4% among non-Muslims.
However, Ahamed cautioned against drawing conclusions of deliberate targeting. He said the researchers could not establish that any particular community had been intentionally targeted.
The Election Commission of India does not maintain religion-wise electoral data, and the researchers’ religious classification was based on an analysis of names using their stated methodology.
The findings are part of a preliminary analysis and could be subject to further verification as the SIR exercise progresses.
