Delhi/Hyderabad, Feb 19 (Maxim News): India has made its neighboring country Pakistan dry during the summer. It has given a big shock to Pakistan, which is instigating terrorism against our country. India is completely blocking not a single drop of the Ravi river water that was our share as part of the Indus Waters Treaty from going to Pakistan.
The main reason for this is the completion of the construction of the Shahpur Kandi Barrage on the Punjab-Jammu Kashmir border, which has been pending for almost 45 years. More than 80 percent of Pakistan’s agriculture depends on the Indus River system. This decision taken by India will cause severe water shortage in summer for Pakistan, which is already struggling with an economic crisis. Analysts believe that drinking water problems are likely to arise, especially in cities like Lahore. After the Pahalgam terror attack last year, India launched ‘Operation Sindhur’ and temporarily suspended the Indus Waters Treaty. In line with Prime Minister Modi’s slogan, “Blood and water cannot flow together,” it has become strategically crucial for India to gain control over its water resources.
According to the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, India has full rights over the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. However, due to the lack of proper storage facilities on the Ravi river, our share of water has been flowing into Pakistan in vain for years. With the completion of the Shapur Kandi Barrage by March 31, 2026, India will divert the surplus water for its own needs from April.
This project will provide irrigation to about 32,173 hectares of land in the drought-prone Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Another 5,000 hectares in Punjab will also benefit.
In addition to irrigation, this dam will generate about 206 megawatts of hydroelectric power.
India will now use about 1,150 cusecs of water, which has been going to waste for years, for its own benefit. (Maxim News)
