Internet, June 20: The Embassy of the State of Palestine has urged India to send urgent medical aid to Gaza, warning that the territory’s healthcare system is close to collapse due to severe shortages of medicines, medical supplies and funds.

In a statement issued on Friday, the embassy appealed to the Indian government, medical institutions and humanitarian organisations to support Gaza’s struggling health sector and help save civilian lives.

The appeal comes as the World Health Organization has warned that Gaza’s health system is at a breaking point. WHO said only 19 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain partially operational, and they are functioning under extreme emergency conditions.

Gaza medical aid appeal highlights severe shortages

The embassy said hospitals in Gaza are facing acute shortages of anaesthetics, antibiotics, dialysis supplies, blood units, insulin, surgical tools and fuel. It added that thousands of patients are waiting for urgent medical evacuation because treatment is no longer available inside the territory.

The statement also flagged worsening public health conditions in overcrowded displacement camps. It said damaged sanitation systems, poor access to clean water and mounting waste have raised the risk of infectious diseases, especially among children, elderly people and those with weak immunity.

The embassy further said child malnutrition is rising and the need for mental health support is growing as the humanitarian crisis deepens.

It also highlighted stress in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, where hospitals are facing financial pressure and shortages due to the withholding of Palestinian tax revenues. According to the embassy, nearly 180 of 520 essential medicines are currently unavailable, including 50 out of 97 cancer and tumour drugs, putting about 4,000 patients at immediate risk.

The Palestinian side said the healthcare sector urgently needs medicines and supplies worth about 100 million US dollars. It urged India to consider assistance through humanitarian channels and referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Aarogya Maitri initiative, which aims to provide medical support to developing countries facing humanitarian crises.

The embassy said immediate international action is needed to stop further collapse of health services in Gaza and respond to the worsening humanitarian emergency.
