Delhi, Oct. 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for recruiting young people motivated by public service rather than the desire to hold public office.
Addressing the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in New Delhi, Modi said recruitment examinations should assess candidates’ knowledge and their reasons for joining the civil services.
He stressed that serving citizens should remain the primary responsibility of public servants.
Modi Highlights Citizen First Approach at UPSC Centenary
Modi said the government must follow two principles: nation first and citizen first. He described citizens as central to public administration and said their service should remain the highest priority.
He emphasised that the recruitment process should identify candidates who genuinely want to serve the public. According to him, examinations should assess not only what candidates know but also why they want to join the civil services.
During the event, Modi released a commemorative coin, a postal stamp and a book titled 100 Landmark Judgements: Shaping the Policies of UPSC and Public Service Commissions in India.
The programme marked the culmination of year-long celebrations that began on October 1, 2025. The celebrations commemorated 100 years since the establishment of the UPSC in 1926.
The Prime Minister’s address highlighted the role of public service in governance and the importance of selecting candidates committed to serving citizens.
