New Delhi 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India’s Commonwealth Games medalists at his residence and praised their performances.
The interaction took place on Sunday and was attended by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of State Raksha Khadse.
Indian Olympic Association President P T Usha also attended the meeting. The athletes shared their experiences from the Games and their preparations.
PM Modi Praises Lovlina And Consoles Mirabai
Modi praised boxer Lovlina Borgohain for objecting to a distorted Indian map displayed at a restaurant in Glasgow.
Lovlina said she politely raised the issue with the restaurant staff. She added that the staff later corrected the display.
Modi said her action showed awareness of the significance of the Indian map. He also said the gesture would be remembered for a long time.
During his interaction with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, Modi asked about her emotional moment on the podium.
Chanu won gold in the 48kg category with a Games record lift of 190kg. She said she had endured injuries and family difficulties over the previous four years.
She also recalled missing an Olympic medal in Paris by one kilogram. Chanu said hearing India’s national anthem on the podium brought back those emotions.
Modi also fed Chanu a laddu during their interaction.
Meanwhile, boxer Narender Berwal shared a humorous incident involving a Pakistani boxer. He recalled the boxer’s reaction after losing to him at the 2015 World Military Games.
India won 39 medals at the truncated Commonwealth Games and finished fourth. The tally included 13 gold medals, with seven coming in boxing.
Modi praised the athletes for inspiring young people across the country. He said their medal winning performances encourage greater interest in sports.
