PM Modi Surpasses Indira Gandhi’s Record for Longest Consecutive Tenure
New Delhi/Hyderabad, July 25, 2025 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a new milestone in Indian political history by surpassing Indira Gandhi’s record for the longest uninterrupted tenure as the country’s Prime Minister.
Indira Gandhi served consecutively from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977—a span of 4,077 days. Today, July 25, 2025, marks Modi’s 4,078th day in continuous office, placing him at the top of the list in terms of uninterrupted prime ministerial service.
A Prime Minister of Many Firsts
Modi’s record is significant not just in terms of duration, but also in its unique nature:
- He is the first Prime Minister born after India’s independence (post-1947) to have served such a long term.
- He is the only non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full consecutive terms in office—2014 to 2019 and 2019 to 2024—and has now entered his third term following the 2024 general elections.
From Gujarat to Delhi: A Streak of Leadership
Narendra Modi’s leadership journey began in Gujarat, where he served as Chief Minister from 2001 to 2014, winning three consecutive state elections in 2002, 2007, and 2012. Under his stewardship, the BJP maintained political dominance in the state for over a decade.

At the national level, the BJP has come to power under Modi’s leadership in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, further cementing his legacy as a leader who delivered electoral success repeatedly both in state and central politics.
On Track to Surpass Jawaharlal Nehru
If Modi continues in office for another year, he is set to break the record of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served for 6,130 days (from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964), albeit with brief parliamentary dissolutions in between.
A Defining Chapter in Indian Political History
With this milestone, Narendra Modi continues to reshape India’s political narrative, not just through policy and governance but also by rewriting the record books of Indian leadership.
