Hyderabad, Feb 11 (Maxim News): Polling for the municipal elections in Telangana state began at 7 am on Wednesday. Voters across the state are eagerly reaching polling stations and exercising their right to vote. The polling will continue till 5 pm. However, the officials have postponed the polling in the sixth ward after an unexpected incident took place in the Maktal Municipality limits of Narayanpet district.
Erukali Mahadevappa (45), a BJP councilor candidate from Ward 6 of Maktal Municipality, committed suicide by hanging himself at his house. The incident has left a deep mark on the locality. The death of the candidate during the election disrupted the election process. As soon as the information was received, the police reached the spot and started an investigation. An investigation is underway into the reasons for the suicide. After this incident, the police, who have increased security in the Maktal area, are continuously monitoring the situation. Steps are being taken to ensure that the election process is not affected in any way.
According to the election rules, if a candidate in the contest dies, the elections for that ward have to be postponed. In this context, the election officials have immediately stopped the polling in Ward 6 of Maktal Municipality. The Election Commission is likely to announce a new date soon. Polling is continuing as usual in the remaining wards. Officials have tightened security arrangements.
Municipal elections are continuing in a peaceful atmosphere across Telangana. Voters have reached polling stations in large numbers in many districts since morning. Women, elderly people and youth are participating in the voting in large numbers. The Election Commission has deployed a large number of police and personnel for the conduct of the elections.
