PV Sindhu Becomes First Indian to Win Japan Open Title

Hyderabad: Indian badminton star PV Sindhu scripted history on Sunday by becoming the first Indian player to win the Japan Open after defeating Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles final of the Japan Open Super 750 tournament in Tokyo.

Sindhu produced a dominant performance to beat the former world champion 21-17, 21-17 in straight games, clinching the first Super 750 title of her career.

Historic Japan Open Triumph for PV Sindhu

The victory marks Sindhu’s first title since winning the Syed Modi International in 2024 and her biggest triumph since capturing the BWF World Championships gold medal in 2019.

Akane Yamaguchi was playing in her sixth Japan Open final, but Sindhu outclassed the home favourite with an aggressive and disciplined display.

Sindhu controlled the match from the opening rally with precise net play, powerful cross-court smashes and accurate body attacks. She consistently kept Yamaguchi under pressure, preventing the Japanese star from finding her rhythm.

The Indian ace maintained her composure throughout the contest, using excellent court coverage and tactical shot placement to seal the historic victory in straight games.

The win is expected to boost Sindhu’s confidence as she prepares for the remainder of the international badminton season.

With this triumph, PV Sindhu has added another milestone to her illustrious career, becoming the first Indian badminton player to lift the prestigious Japan Open title.
