Hyderabad, march 26: IIIT Hyderabad hosted a roundtable and workshop on Quantum Technologies for Life Sciences in association with NITI Aayog on March 25, 2026. The event brought together researchers, industry leaders, startups, and policymakers. They discussed how quantum computing and sensing can address challenges in healthcare, biology, and drug discovery.

The workshop included brainstorming sessions, invited talks, and panel discussions. Experts from academia, industry, and government took part. They focused on understanding how quantum technologies can impact life sciences. Moreover, the discussions aimed to identify practical and high-value use cases.

Meanwhile, participants explored four key areas. These included quantum computing for drug discovery and scientific modelling. They also examined quantum-enabled diagnostics and sensing applications. Therefore, the event created a platform to study how these technologies can reshape research and innovation.

Earlier, a closed-door think tank roundtable was held on March 23. It brought together select experts to identify high-impact and practical use cases. The discussions covered molecular modelling, quantum chemistry, protein structure prediction, diagnostics, and genomic data analysis. Participants noted that quantum computing is a longer-term proposition. However, they said quantum sensing offers immediate opportunities, especially in precision imaging and healthcare.

Speaking at the event, Prof Deva Priyakumar said, “The convergence of quantum technologies and life sciences presents both immense opportunity and significant complexity. Our focus is on identifying realistic, high-value problems where quantum approaches can deliver tangible impact, while building a collaborative ecosystem to take these ideas forward,”

Also, Prof Indranil Chakrabarty said, “We are honoured by the opportunity to engage with NITI Aayog and look forward to continued collaboration in the future.”

Rama Devi Lanka added, “The initiative with IIIT Hyderabad is a key step in translating India’s quantum ambition into tangible outcomes. By building a collaborative ecosystem across academia, industry, and government, we aim to translate high-impact use cases into deployable solutions—accelerating innovation in healthcare while strengthening India’s technological leadership and sovereignty.”

Insights from the session will be compiled into a white paper and roadmap. This will help enable industry-led research initiatives and guide future development in the field.
