Rahul Gandhi SIR Petition | New Delhi / Hyderabad, Oct 13: The Supreme Court registry has flagged 14 technical and procedural defects in the joint petition filed by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other India bloc leaders against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The petition has not made it to the court’s daily cause list.
The petition challenges the SIR and decisions of the Election Commission of India. Rahul Gandhi, India bloc MPs and other leaders had gone in a large rally to the Supreme Court on Monday evening to file it.
The registry asked the petitioners to cure the defects. Officials said the petition cannot be listed before a bench until the prescribed process is completed. That has halted an immediate hearing.
Rahul Gandhi SIR Petition | Court fee shortfall and missing vakalatnamas among defects
Among the main defects, the registry noted a shortfall of ₹220 in court fee. It also found that the required vakalatnamas were not attached for nine of the 11 petitioners.
The photocopy of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s ID card was very blurry, the registry said. It also pointed out that several key supporting documents mentioned in the petition were missing.
The Congress legal team is reportedly working to the defects. Party sources said the petition may be mentioned before the bench of the Chief Justice of India (CJI) for urgent hearing.
