Ranabaali Movie Review: Vijay Deverakonda And Rashmika Mandanna’s Period Drama

Hyderabad, Oct. 17: Ranabaali, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, released worldwide on October 16. Set against the Great Madras Famine of 1876–78, the Telugu period drama combines historical themes, romance and emotional storytelling. However, its ambitious scope risks making the narrative feel overstuffed.

Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film arrives amid competition from Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, which released on October 15. The two films target different audiences, but trade observers believe the latter’s popularity could affect Ranabaali’s box office performance.

Ranabaali Faces Advance Booking Challenges

According to Sacnilk figures cited in the source report, Ranabaali recorded advance bookings worth Rs 3.23 crore in the Telugu-speaking states for its opening day. Hyderabad led the city-wise figures with Rs 1.17 crore. Karnataka recorded Rs 27.26 lakh, while Tamil Nadu reported Rs 3.79 lakh.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana had 1,837 shows scheduled for the opening day, compared with 252 shows in Karnataka.

A trade expert quoted by media expressed concern about the advance bookings, considering the film’s scale, star cast and promotional campaign. The expert suggested that the film’s opening could depend heavily on spot bookings and audience word of mouth.

Vijay and Rashmika’s Reunion Raises Expectations

The film marks Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna’s return as an on-screen pair following their earlier collaborations. Their 2018 film Geetha Govindam was a major success, while Dear Comrade received a more mixed commercial response.

Vijay is also looking to regain strong theatrical momentum after a run without a major solo-hero blockbuster. During a recent audience interaction, he expressed confidence about returning to success on his own terms.

The actor also alleged that some negative social media comments about Ranabaali were part of an organised campaign. These claims have not been independently established in the source report.

Rashmika plays Jayamma, whose relationship with Ranabaali is expected to contribute to the film’s emotional core. The historical setting and portrayal of suffering during the famine may also help the film connect with audiences.

With Jailer 2 drawing audiences in Telugu-speaking markets, Ranabaali faces a challenging opening. Its theatrical prospects will depend on audience response, occupancy and reviews following release.
